Honorable Mention: Jack McEnany, creative non-fiction writer, Franconia

Jack McEnanyJack McEnany is a fiction writer and educator. His publications include: Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun, co-written with skier Bode Miller. For this effort he received a “Best Book” designation from the International Ski History Association. His second book, Brush Ape: On Wood, Trees, and the Most Dangerous Job in America earned him a “Best of 2009” designation from Mother Jones magazine.

McEnany’s writings have appeared in magazines and journals including The Nation, The Humanist, The Progressive Review, and Exquisite Corpse and he is a regular contributor to Men’s Journal.  He has received a Puffin Foundation Fellowship and has been a lecturer at both Granite State College and in New Hampshire’s community college system. Currently, he works as a grant writer. McEnany holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Anselm College and a master’s in writing from Johns Hopkins University.

In his artist statement McEnany wrote, “I compose in the first person vernacular, explaining controversial and complicated topics – politics, public policy, ski racing, international affairs, climate change, the forest, and history – in lay terms using humor, the occasional vulgarity, facts, well-considered opinion, and science.”
